Benefits
As the capsule is easily swallowed, no sedation or analgesia is required. During capsule endoscopy up to 50,000 colour images are recorded while the capsule passes through the GI tract by peristalsis and is excreted naturally.
Unlike some investigations, capsule endoscopy avoids exposure to potentially harmful radiation. Capsule endoscopy may also make additional investigations unnecessary. Following capsule endoscopy, patients go home later the same day.
Capsule endoscopy provides excellent visualisation of the oesophagus and the small bowel.
The findings of many clinical studies have shown that capsule endoscopy is significantly superior for the examination of the small bowel for a wide range of conditions compared to barium enteroclysis and follow through, CT, MRI, push enteroscopy and ileoscopy.
